As mining experiences a resurgence in Nigeria, it brings forth both opportunities and challenges, especially concerning the prevalence of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) against women. Our project, “Empowering Communities,” endeavors to confront these challenges head-on by addressing the inadequacies in regulatory frameworks, the dominance of male-centric structures within the industry, the prevalence of informal mining operations, and the lack of accessible prevention and support services.
Additionally, our initiative aims to bolster economic empowerment among women, equipping them with the tools and resources necessary to thrive independently in these mining communities. Through targeted interventions and capacity-building efforts, we aspire to catalyze meaningful change and foster safer, more inclusive environments for all individuals impacted by mining activities in Nassarawa State.
Our overarching goal is to effectively address and prevent SGBV in mining communities. We aim to train community activists, develop reference protocols, strengthen referral pathways, and provide comprehensive support services to survivors. Additionally, we focus on promoting gender equality, leadership, and entrepreneurship among women and girls in mining communities.
