Nigeria’s mining sector boasts a rich diversity of high-value commodities spread across its 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. Identified as a key sector for economic diversification, the government has prioritized the development of strategic minerals, including coal, bitumen, limestone, iron ore, barytes, gold, and lead/zinc. Within this landscape, the artisanal mining sector plays a pivotal role, providing livelihoods for millions of individuals and their dependents.
Despite comprising around 80% of mining operators, women in the artisanal mining sector face numerous challenges stemming from gender-based discrimination and patriarchal norms. These obstacles hinder their agency, economic empowerment, and overall well-being. Issues such as gender-based violence, limited access to justice, and inadequate economic opportunities persist, perpetuating gender inequality and exacerbating poverty.
Our project aims to address these challenges head-on by strengthening the Women in Mining in Nigeria (WIMIN) initiative and promoting access to economic opportunities and equity for women in the mining sector. Through targeted interventions focused on creating access to justice, improving equity in mining policies and practices, and enhancing the economic capacity of women miners, we aspire to catalyze positive change and foster a more inclusive and sustainable mining sector in Nigeria.
