 Meet Our November WIMTI Speakers

The speakers for our November Women in Mining Training Institute (WIMTI) Class scheduled to hold on Thursday 17th have now been unveiled. The event, which holds on our Zoom virtual platform is scheduled for 4pm to 6pm, and has the theme; “Impact of Climate Change on Mining”.

1. Prof. Charles Ononiju Ofoegbu

Professor Charles Ofoegbu is a veteran Geophysicist with a proven track record in the public and private sectors. He is an alumnus of the University of Nigeria Nsukka where he bagged a Bachelor’s degree before moving on to the University of Durham, UK where he would eventually earn a Ph.D in Applied Geophysics, obtaining an MSc. and Ph.D in a space of three years.

Prof. Ofoegbu had an early stint with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation as a Geophysicist before moving into academics. Today, he is a Professor of Geophysics and the Director, Institute of Geosciences and Earth Resources at the Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK).

Professor Ofoegbu has served in various capacities, including as Special Adviser to the Government of Abia State on Mineral Resources and Environmental Protection, Head of Exploration Research at the NNPC’s R&D Division, DG/CEO, Nigerian building and Road Research Institute, and Chairman of the National Think Tank on Solid Minerals, among others.

Other notable positions he has held include Project Director/Vice Chancellor, Catholic University of Nigeria (Veritas University), Guest Professor, Mathematical Geophysics, Frei Universitat, Berlin, Visiting Professor, National Universities Commission, and Chairman, Mineral Resources and Environmental Management Committee (MIREMCO), Anambra State, to mention a few.

He is a Fellow of the Geological Society of London (FGS), Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society (FRAS), Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Physics (FNIP), and a Fellow of the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (FNMGS).

 

2. Dr Damilola Adesina

Dr Damilola Adesina is an Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) and Sustainability expert with experience in the policy, strategy, and operationalization of safeguards across key sectors such as Agriculture, Power, Health, Mining, Housing, Manufacturing and Infrastructural Development.

He has coordinated the preparation of several E&S instruments like ESMS, ESIAs, ESMPs, ESMFs, RAPs, CDAs and Environmental Audits. He has also provided preparation and implementation support to multinational projects in countries such as Cameroon, Ghana and Tanzania.

Over the years, He has initiated, designed, and delivered capacity building programs on Environmental and Social Safeguards for Ministry of Mines and Steel Development as well as the Federal Ministry of Power. He is apt in preparing Environmental and Social Assessments of greenfield projects, and in preparing supplementary assessments for brownfield projects.
